03 Jan 11 Questions To Help You Recap Your Year (And Make The Next One Awesome)
Each year, Team Corker gets together and maps out our upcoming year. But before we think about our goals, plans, or upcoming deliverables, we take some time to reflect on the past 365 days. To guide our reflection process we use the following questions our friend Paulina shared with us back in 2014. They’ve been so great that we continue to use the same ones to help us find focus each new year.
So grab a pen, a warm cup of something delicious, and a quiet spot in your apartment or office so you can write down your answers to the following questions:
This past year…
- Where did I thrive?
- Where did I struggle?
- Who was important in my life & why?
- What lesson am I grateful to have learned?
- Where & how was I courageous?
- What brought me joy?
- How did I treat my body? heart? spirit? mind?
- How did I show up for the people I care about?
- What situations triggered fear or discomfort? Did I move through them? If so, how? If not, why not?
- Which rituals and habits served me well and which ones did not?
And the additional question that we ask ourselves is…
- Now that you know this, what are you going to do about it?
Using the last question as a prompt, write out your new habits or commitments for the year.
To give you an idea of what I mean, here are some examples of habits some clients of mine want to adopt this year, and how they’ll influence their goals:
Arrive 4 minutes before each meeting begins.
Drink lemon water first before my morning run.
Spend more time with my partner.
Then consider, if you did what you said you are going to do (#integrity), what result would that create in your life? When would you like to see that result take place by? This is one way of crafting your annual goals.
I reach my annual sales targets by October.
I achieve a half-marathon personal best time by May.
We go on three double-date adventures with our friends by November.
Give the process a try, and see if you can inspire some change in your own life.
